Maesteg Map Poster & Print
Maesteg is the main town of the Llynfi Valley, north of Bridgend in South Wales. Like many valley towns, it grew quickly on iron and coal in the nineteenth century, and its shape comes straight from the landscape. It is a long, narrow settlement that follows the valley floor, with steep hills on either side.
On a map this makes one of the most characteristic patterns in Britain. Parallel rows of terraced housing run along the contours and step up the slopes in tidy lines. At the bottom of the valley the river, the main road and the railway to Bridgend run through the town together.
The town also has a place in Welsh cultural history. The national anthem, Hen Wlad Fy Nhadau, is widely recorded as having been first sung in public in Maesteg in 1856. A Maesteg map poster shows the valley town in its purest form, rows of streets set against the empty uplands.

Llynfi valley floor
The river, the road and the railway share the narrow valley bottom. They run side by side through the town as a bundle of lines.
Open hillsides
Above the last streets the slopes are mostly unbuilt. The town appears framed by broad, empty space on both sides.

Valley towns inspire deep loyalty, and many people who grew up in Maesteg carry a clear picture of its streets wherever they live. The poster turns that picture into something to hang on the wall, a direct and unsentimental portrait of home.
