Mahdishahr, formerly known as Sangsar, is a town in Semnan Province in northern Iran. It lies just north of the city of Semnan, at the foot of the Alborz mountains. Its setting is a meeting of two landscapes: behind it the land rises into the mountains, and to the south it opens toward dry plains at the edge of the desert.
The town has a distinctive local identity. Its people, the Sangsari, have their own language and a long tradition of seasonal herding, moving flocks between mountain and lowland pastures. Gardens and orchards around the built-up streets add a fine, subdivided texture to the map.
