Maison Blanche is one of the four administrative quarters of the 13th arrondissement of Paris and covers its southern part up to the city limits. On a map it is framed by broad boulevards and cut through by the Avenue d'Italie, the old route south out of the city. The Boulevard Périphérique draws its southern edge as a hard, curving line where Paris ends.
Within those borders the pattern is surprisingly varied. Around the Butte-aux-Cailles, a small hill with a village atmosphere, short streets twist and meet at odd angles. Elsewhere the grid becomes wider and more regular, with twentieth-century housing blocks and long avenues. The Bièvre river once flowed through this part of the city before it was covered over, and the ground still dips where its valley ran.

Avenue d'Italie
The long, straight avenue runs south through the quarter toward the Porte d'Italie. It acts as the central axis of the composition and is a line most residents know well.
Périphérique edge
The ring road traces the southern boundary in a broad curve, with Parc Kellermann beside it, and gives the poster a clean, graphic frame at the city limit.
