Marble quarry belt
Open pits and quarry tracks surround the town in angular shapes that stand out from the ordinary street pattern. From above, they are the defining feature of the Makrāna landscape.

Makrāna Map Poster & Print
Makrāna is in the Nagaur district of Rajasthan, on semi-arid ground where the most striking features on a map are excavations rather than streets. Quarries open up around the town in irregular shapes, some deep and square-edged, with tracks winding between them. The town itself is a dense cluster of lanes and low buildings, with roads leading out to the workings and the railway.
The marble quarried here is among the most celebrated in India. It was used for the Taj Mahal in Agra and later for the Victoria Memorial in Kolkata, and Makrāna stone still travels across the country for temples, homes and monuments. Much of the local economy depends on cutting, polishing and shipping it, which is why workshops line the roads on the outskirts.
A Makrāna map poster is an unusual kind of city portrait. It has no rivers or coastlines. Instead it shows a settlement defined by what has been taken out of the ground around it. In black and white, the quarry edges and dense old lanes form a textured, almost geological composition, which suits a town whose stone is set into so many other places.

Dense town lanes
The older core is a tight network of narrow lanes and closely packed buildings. This kind of fine-grained pattern looks almost woven when printed at a large size.
Roads to the workings
Roads lead out from the centre to quarries, yards and workshops, and many are lined with stone-cutting businesses. On the map they read as spokes connecting the town to the land it works.

དོན་དག་ཡོད་པའི་ས་ཁྲ།
Families with roots in the stone trade, architects, and anyone who has admired the marble of the Taj Mahal may find particular meaning in this map. It shows the source of the stone rather than the monument, which makes it a thoughtful piece for a studio or for a home built with stone.
The title and subtitle can say anything you like, such as a family business name or a founding year, with the coordinates line beneath. Pick Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint or Sand. Then download the print-ready files for $9, or order a matte print with an optional wooden frame.
