Malbork lies on the Nogat, a branch of the Vistula delta in Pomerania, and its map is shaped by one enormous structure. On the east bank stands the Castle of the Teutonic Order, a complex of walls, courtyards and outer wards that takes up a remarkable share of the riverside and is recognisable even at street-map scale.
The castle was the order's headquarters from the early fourteenth century and is often described as the largest castle in the world by land area. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, heavily restored after severe damage in 1945.

The Nogat River
The river runs north past the fortress towards the Vistula Lagoon, a calm diagonal line that separates the town from the flat delta farmland.
Railway junction
Malbork is an important rail junction, and several lines converge here, cutting clean arcs through the southern districts of the town.
