Valley-floor layout
The town follows the line of its valley, so the streets form a long, narrow shape instead of a square grid.

Mali Map Poster & Print
Mali is a small town in southeastern Gansu province, in the loess hill country of northwest China. This landscape is defined by deep, fine soil worn by water into ridges, gullies and terraced slopes. On a map, this terrain explains almost everything about the town's shape.
Streets and roads follow the valley floor, bending with the watercourses instead of forming a regular grid. The built-up area stretches along these lines, and the terraced hillsides around it appear as mostly empty space on a road map. Small tracks lead up into the hills towards villages and farmland.
A Mali map poster is a quiet, linear composition: a settlement stretched along its valley, with a few branching roads and the suggestion of hills all around. It is a personal choice, ideal for people with roots in this part of Gansu who want a simple, honest image of home.

Loess terrain
The surrounding hills of soft windblown soil are carved into gullies and terraces, which shape where roads can run and where houses can be built.
Branching tracks
Minor roads climb away from the main route into the hills, drawing thin lines that reach out towards outlying villages.
