Malyn lies in the north of Zhytomyr Oblast, in the forested Polissia region, on the Irsha river. On a map, the river winds through the town and gives the street network an irregular, meandering spine. A railway line crosses the town, connecting it with Kyiv and with Korosten to the west, and the station area forms one of its clearest focal points.
