Manakunnam lies on the southeastern side of the Kochi urban area in Ernakulam district, in the low, water-rich country that surrounds Kerala's largest port city. On a map it does not follow a grid. This part of central Kerala is shaped by its backwaters, the network of lagoons, rivers and channels that runs parallel to the Arabian Sea coast.
