Manitowoc is on the western shore of Lake Michigan, at the mouth of the Manitowoc River. On a map, the lake fills one whole side of the frame, and the river cuts through the city before reaching the harbour. Breakwaters and piers extend into the water, and the blocks along the lakefront follow the straight shoreline.
The city has a long shipbuilding history. During the Second World War, Manitowoc's yards built submarines that were floated down rivers to the Gulf of Mexico. The Wisconsin Maritime Museum stands near the river today. In summer, the SS Badger car ferry crosses the lake between Manitowoc and Ludington, Michigan.
