Mardakan Map Poster & Print
Mardakan lies on the Absheron peninsula east of Baku, in a dry, low landscape near the Caspian Sea. For generations it has been a place of summer houses and gardens, and from above its streets form an irregular network of lanes between walled plots. Toward the sea, the pattern gives way to beaches and holiday complexes along the shore.
Mardakan is known for its medieval defensive towers, one square and one round, dating from the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries and built as refuges for the local population. It is also home to an arboretum on the grounds of a former estate, where plants from many regions grow in the dry Absheron climate. The poet Sergei Yesenin stayed here in the 1920s.
A Mardakan map poster shows a settlement that grew organically around gardens and old roads, with the coast defining one edge. Lanes bend and branch, larger plots break up the pattern, and the main roads link it to Baku and the neighbouring villages. It is an intricate, slightly unpredictable composition for anyone with memories of summers on the Absheron coast.

Garden lanes
Narrow lanes run between walled gardens and summer houses. Their irregular pattern gives the map a dense, hand-drawn feel quite unlike a planned grid.
Caspian shoreline
The coast forms one edge of the town, with beaches and resorts along it. The smooth line of the shore frames the intricate streets inland.

དོན་དག་ཡོད་པའི་ས་ཁྲ།
For many families from Baku, Mardakan means long summers at the dacha, gardens and the walk down to the sea. A map of its lanes brings those memories into the home in a quiet, unsentimental way.
