Mariestad sits on the eastern shore of Lake Vänern, Sweden's largest lake, where the river Tidan flows into it. Duke Charles, later King Charles IX, founded the town in 1583 and named it after his wife, Maria of the Palatinate. For a long time it was the residence of the governor of Skaraborg county, and its cathedral still stands on the skyline.
The map is dominated by water. The irregular Vänern shoreline, with its inlets, points and small islands, forms the town's western edge. The Tidan cuts through the centre on its way to the lake. Around the river mouth, the older quarter keeps a close grain of small blocks, where low wooden houses line narrow streets.

The river Tidan cuts through the town and empties into Vänern. The historic centre grew up around this meeting of river and lake.
Old wooden quarter
