Meaux sits on a bend of the Marne, east of Paris, and water shapes almost every part of its map. The river curls around the town in wide loops, and side channels and a canal run close alongside. The old centre lies on the northern bank, grouped around the cathedral of Saint-Étienne and the former bishop's palace, with medieval streets tightly packed between them.
The town is known for Brie de Meaux, one of France's best-known cheeses, and for Jacques-Bénigne Bossuet, the seventeenth-century bishop and preacher who served here. The first Battle of the Marne was fought nearby in 1914, and Meaux is now home to a large museum dedicated to the First World War.
