Middletown is one of the larger municipalities in Monmouth County, New Jersey, and its map covers a lot of ground. The northern edge follows the Raritan Bay shoreline, the southern edge runs along the Navesink River, and between them lies a patchwork of separate villages and suburban neighbourhoods rather than one single centre.
The Garden State Parkway cuts through the township from north to south, and it is one of the clearest lines on the print. On either side, curving subdivision streets alternate with older roads that once linked farms and small hamlets. Parkland and wooded areas near the river and the bay open up the design, especially toward the eastern side.

Navesink River
To the south the Navesink widens as it heads toward the ocean. It gives the bottom of the map a broad, clean band of open water.
