The runways
The long parallel lines of the air base are the most striking feature of the map, a precise geometric shape set against the softer outlines of town and countryside.

Misawa Map Poster & Print
Misawa lies in eastern Aomori Prefecture, at the northern end of Honshu. On the map, the Pacific shoreline forms a long, nearly straight edge to the east, and Lake Ogawara spreads to the northwest. Between them are the city's grid of streets, farmland and the broad rectangle of Misawa Air Base, which is shared by Japanese and United States forces.
The airfield dominates the plan. Its runways are the longest straight lines in the area, and the base and the town have grown up around each other. Misawa also holds a place in aviation history. In 1931 the aircraft Miss Veedol took off from Sabishiro Beach here and completed the first nonstop flight across the Pacific.
A Misawa map poster brings these elements together: the sea, the lake, the runways and the town fitted between them. Many people have lived here for a posting of a few years, and for them this map is a clear and lasting record of a place that became home for a while.

Pacific shoreline
To the east, an almost straight coastline runs north to south. This is the beach area associated with the historic 1931 transpacific flight.
Lake Ogawara
The large lake to the northwest adds a wide expanse of open water. It balances the composition and frames the city on its inland side.
