Montería spreads across the flat plains of the Sinú valley in northern Colombia, and the Sinú River is the spine of its map. The river runs from south to north through the city in gentle curves, with the historic centre on one bank and neighbourhoods expanding on both sides in a grid of streets that grows looser toward the edges.
Along the river runs the Ronda del Sinú, a long linear park with walkways and trees that has become the city's main public space. With only a few bridges, small cable ferries known as planchones have long carried people across the water, a detail that keeps the river at the centre of daily life.
Founded in 1777, Montería is the capital of Córdoba department and is widely known as Colombia's cattle capital, surrounded by ranch land and wetlands.
