Morgan Hill lies in the southern part of Santa Clara County, where the valley narrows between two ranges of hills. From above, the town stretches along a north–south axis, following the old Monterey Road and the US 101 freeway, with neighbourhoods filling the flat ground between them.
The town’s most recognisable landmark is El Toro, a steep, rounded peak that rises right at its western edge. On a Morgan Hill map poster, the hills close in on both sides, and the blank space of their slopes gives the grid a clear frame.
East of the town, Anderson Lake reservoir fills a long, narrow valley in the foothills, adding a strong organic shape to the composition. Morgan Hill takes its name from Hiram Morgan Hill, who married into a local landowning family in the nineteenth century, and the town grew as a quiet agricultural centre before the Bay Area spread south.
