The centre of Münster is surrounded by the Promenade, a tree-lined ring built on the site of the old fortifications and now reserved largely for cyclists and pedestrians. Inside it, the streets curve around the cathedral and the Prinzipalmarkt, with its gabled merchants' houses. Outside, the city spreads in every direction, with the long Aasee lake reaching into the south-western districts.
In 1648, parts of the Peace of Westphalia, which ended the Thirty Years' War, were negotiated and signed in Münster's town hall. Today the city is known for its large university and for the bicycle, which is its most common way to get around. Both leave a mark on the map, with university buildings spread through the city and a dense network of cycling routes.

Aasee lake
The long lake stretches south-west from the edge of the centre, providing a large open shape bordered by parks and university buildings.
Cathedral quarter
Streets inside the ring bend around the cathedral square and the Prinzipalmarkt, giving the old town its irregular, medieval pattern.
