Murray is the county seat of Calloway County in western Kentucky, and its centre is a traditional courthouse square. Streets run out from the square in a regular grid of blocks, lined with older commercial buildings and then with tree-shaded residential streets. Further out, the grid loosens into suburban neighbourhoods and highway corridors.
The biggest single feature on the map is Murray State University, whose campus spreads across a large area on the north side of town. Its quads, halls and athletic facilities form a distinct pattern of paths and buildings. For many people, this campus is the reason they know Murray at all.
East of town lies Kentucky Lake, one of the largest artificial lakes in the eastern United States, and beyond it the Land Between the Lakes recreation area.
