Næstved lies in southern Zealand, on the Suså river a short way inland from the coast. On a map, the old town sits on higher ground by the river, its streets gathering around the market square and St. Peter's Church. Later districts spread in all directions across gently rolling land.
To the south-west, a canal and the lower river lead to Karrebæk Fjord, giving the town a narrow waterway to the sea and a small harbour. Forests, lakes and estates surround it. Næstved is one of the larger towns of Zealand outside the Copenhagen area and has a long history as a market and trading centre. Nearby stands Herlufsholm, a boarding school founded in 1565 on the site of a medieval monastery. The town is also associated with the Holmegaard glassworks, a short distance to the north-east.

Canal to the fjord
A straight canal runs from the harbour towards Karrebæk Fjord. It is one of the clearest single lines on the map and the town's link to open water.
