Zenkō-ji approach
The main avenue climbs from Nagano Station north to Zenkō-ji, a straight spine that organises the centre and gives the map a strong vertical line.

Nagano Map Poster & Print
Nagano sits in a broad basin surrounded by mountains, close to where the Sai River flows into the Chikuma. On the map the city lies across flat land between these rivers, with a regular pattern of streets that grows denser toward the north, where the ground begins to rise.
At the top of the main approach stands Zenkō-ji, a Buddhist temple founded more than thirteen centuries ago, and the town grew largely as a temple settlement around it. Nagano gained international recognition as host of the 1998 Winter Olympics, and today the Hokuriku Shinkansen connects it directly with Tokyo.
A Nagano map poster shows the city as a clear axis: the long avenue from the station up to the temple, the grid on either side, and the wide rivers curving along the southern and eastern edges, with mountain roads winding off at the margins.

River confluence
The Sai and Chikuma rivers meet on the eastern side of the city. Their wide, braided channels form an open pale area against the dense urban blocks.
Mountain rim
At the edges of the basin, the street grid gives way to winding roads climbing into the hills, a reminder of the mountains that surround the city.
