Nahorkatiya is a town in Dibrugarh district in Upper Assam. It is closely connected with oil: a major oil discovery was made in this area in the early 1950s, and oil installations, pipelines and company housing have shaped the town since then.
On a map, Nahorkatiya is less a single grid than a group of clusters. There is a market area, organised company residential areas, and roads leading out to the oil fields and tea estates. The tea gardens form large blocks with a few internal roads, which leave wide calm spaces between settlements.
