Nijlen is a municipality in the Belgian province of Antwerp, made up of three centres: Nijlen itself, Kessel and Bevel. Seen from above, it is not one town but a small constellation. Each village has its own compact core around a church, and ribbons of houses stretch along the roads that link them. Between these ribbons lie fields, woodland and meadow.
The landscape belongs to the Kempen, the sandy region of northern Belgium, and the map shows it clearly. The railway runs across the municipality as a firm, straight line. It stands out clearly against the softer pattern of village lanes and gives the composition a strong diagonal.
