Ningdong lies in Ningxia, east of the Yellow River and within reach of the regional capital, Yinchuan. It is known mainly as the site of a large energy and chemical industry base. That base was built around the area's coal reserves, and the town grew up to serve it. It is a recent place, and it looks like one.
From above, Ningdong is a composition of very large rectangles. There are industrial compounds, storage yards and residential districts, and broad roads run between them. The surrounding land is dry and thinly vegetated, part of the transition toward desert. So the built area stands out sharply, with scattered tracks and rail spurs running away from it into open ground.
