Nizhyn lies in Chernihiv Oblast in northern Ukraine, on the Oster river. On a map, the river loops through the town in tight bends, and the historic centre sits close to it. The town has a long history as a trading centre and is well known for two things. Nikolai Gogol studied at the Nizhyn Gymnasium of Higher Sciences, the institution that later became the town's university.
