North Guwāhāti sits on the northern bank of the Brahmaputra in Assam, directly across the river from the city of Guwahati. On a map, the river dominates everything: a broad band of water, with sandbars and channels, separating the town from the dense urban grid on the opposite shore. The town is home to the Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati, whose large campus, with its lakes and spread-out buildings, forms a distinctive shape on the map.
