Offenbach am Main lies directly east of Frankfurt, on the southern bank of the Main. The river forms the city's northern edge in a wide curve, and the centre sits close to it, with dense blocks of housing and former industrial areas spreading south and east. From above, the boundary with Frankfurt is almost invisible; the river is the clearer line.
The city was long known as a centre of the leather goods industry, and the German Leather Museum is still here. Today Offenbach is known for its design school, the HfG Offenbach, and for football club Kickers Offenbach. The Renaissance Isenburg Palace stands near the riverbank in the old centre.

Riverside centre
The historic core, including Isenburg Palace, lies close to the Main. Its streets run towards the river, forming a tight, irregular pattern near the water.
Harbour quarter
The former river harbour has been turned into a new residential and business district. Its long basin and modern blocks add a distinct geometric shape to the waterfront.
