Oświęcim lies in southern Poland where the Soła River flows into the Vistula. The rivers shape the map strongly: the Soła runs north through the town, dividing it into two parts linked by bridges, and the wider Vistula curves along the northern edge. The historic centre, with its market square and castle on a rise above the Soła, sits on the eastern bank.
The town has a long history of its own, going back to medieval times as the seat of a duchy. It is known worldwide as the location of the Auschwitz-Birkenau memorial and museum, established on the site of the former German Nazi concentration and extermination camp. Many visitors come for that reason, and the memorial is a significant presence in the town.

On the eastern bank, a castle stands on a rise above the Soła, near the market square that forms the heart of the historic town.
