Oxnard is the largest city in Ventura County, on the broad, flat Oxnard Plain between the Santa Clara River and the Pacific Ocean. The map reads as a series of neat grids and suburban loops, framed by long, straight farm roads that divide the surrounding fields into large rectangles. To the west the coastline runs almost straight, broken by beaches and marina channels.
The city grew up around a sugar beet factory founded by the Oxnard brothers at the end of the nineteenth century. Farming remains central to its identity, especially strawberries, for which the area is widely known. Channel Islands Harbor adds a set of engineered basins and fingers of land along the coast, and the Port of Hueneme lies just to the south.
