Pantin sits directly north-east of Paris, just outside the Boulevard Périphérique. Its streets continue the capital's dense fabric, but the town is cut into sections by strong linear features: the Canal de l'Ourcq running straight through it, railway lines and the main roads toward the eastern suburbs. The large green space of the Parc de la Villette lies just across the city boundary.
Pantin grew as an industrial town, and several of its large former industrial buildings have taken on new uses. The Grands Moulins de Pantin, a former mill on the canal, has been converted into offices, and the Centre national de la danse occupies a former administrative building by the water.
