Perbaungan lies on the lowland of North Sumatra, east of Medan, on the main road that runs along the island's east coast. The town grows along this road, so its streets line up with it and then thin out quickly into the surrounding countryside. The land is flat, and the Strait of Malacca is not far to the north.
Around the town, the map is mostly farmland: rice fields, smallholdings and plantation blocks, crossed by rivers and irrigation channels flowing towards the coast. Perbaungan works as a local trading centre for this agricultural district of Serdang Bedagai, and its shops and markets gather along the main road.
