Open town grid
Popondetta's streets form a loose, generous grid with plenty of space between blocks. On the poster this gives the centre a light, airy look, unlike the crowded cores of older towns.

Popondetta Map Poster & Print
Popondetta is the capital of Oro Province in Papua New Guinea. It stands on a broad coastal plain between the Owen Stanley Range and the Solomon Sea. The town is fairly spread out, with wide streets, open blocks and government and market areas set in a loose grid. Roads run out from it toward the coast, the plantations and the mountains.
The town owes its role to a volcanic disaster. In 1951, Mount Lamington erupted and destroyed the government station at Higaturu, killing thousands of people, and the provincial administration later moved to Popondetta. The surrounding land is known for oil palm cultivation, and the province is home to the Queen Alexandra's birdwing, the largest butterfly in the world.
A Popondetta map poster shows a town that is open rather than dense. Streets sit comfortably apart, the airstrip at Girua adds a long straight form, and the roads toward Oro Bay and the interior lead out of the frame. It is a portrait of a place shaped by plains, rivers and the volcano in the distance.

Roads to the coast
Routes lead from town toward Oro Bay and the plantations of the plain. They show up as long, clear lines that connect the town to the coast and the wider province.
Girua airstrip
The airport outside town appears as a single straight runway in open land. It is a strong graphic element and an important link for a province with limited road connections.

Popondetta is home for many families in Oro Province, and a reference point for people who have worked in the region or walked the Kokoda Track nearby. A map of the town keeps that connection visible, far from the plain and the mountains.
