Pradera lies in the Valle del Cauca, on the eastern side of the wide Cauca valley, where the flat farmland starts to rise towards the Central Cordillera. On a map the town shows as a tidy block pattern, the kind of grid found in many Colombian towns, with a central square and streets running out towards the fields.
The land around the town is mostly given over to agriculture, and sugarcane plays a large role in this part of the department. Beyond the last blocks the map opens into long, straight field boundaries and rural roads. To the east the ground climbs into the mountains, and the street pattern thins out as the terrain changes.
