Rahim Yar Khan lies in the far south of Punjab, close to the border with Sindh. The land around it is completely flat, and on a map the city is surrounded by a network of straight irrigation canals and field boundaries that divide the plain into long, regular strips. The Indus River flows some distance to the west.
The city grew as a market and administrative centre for the surrounding farmland, which is known for cotton and sugarcane. Its older core is made up of dense, narrow streets near the railway, while newer housing schemes spread outward on straighter, wider grids. The main north–south highway and the railway line run past the city on parallel tracks.

Old market core
