Rancagua Map Poster & Print
Rancagua is the capital of Chile's O'Higgins Region, about 90 kilometres south of Santiago in the fertile Central Valley. Its historic centre is unusual. The founding plan of 1743 placed the main square where two axes cross, so the Plaza de los Héroes sits at the meeting of four streets in the shape of a cross, a pattern still visible within the surrounding grid.
In 1814 the city was the site of the Battle of Rancagua, when patriot forces under Bernardo O'Higgins were besieged around the square and broke out at great cost. Today Rancagua is closely tied to copper. The El Teniente mine, one of the largest underground copper mines in the world, lies in the mountains to the east.
A Rancagua map poster shows a city of even blocks spread across flat farmland, with the Cachapoal River drawing a wide, braided line along its southern edge. It suits mining families, fans of the national rodeo championship held here, and anyone whose Chilean roots lead back to the O'Higgins valley.

Cachapoal River
The river runs along the south side of the city in a broad, braided channel, giving the poster a loose, organic edge.
Valley grid
Beyond the old centre, straight streets extend across the level valley floor in a steady pattern of blocks that reaches out toward orchards and fields.

Rancagua is where Chile's independence story took one of its hardest turns, and it is also a working city of miners and farmers. For people from here, the cross at its centre is instantly familiar, even without labels.
