Rishra lies on the western bank of the Hooghly River in West Bengal's Hooghly district, part of the long chain of towns that follows the river north of Kolkata. From above it is a thin, stretched shape. The river forms a broad curve along its eastern edge, and the main railway line runs roughly parallel a short distance inland.
Between river and rails the street pattern is dense and uneven. Short lanes run down toward the ghats, and long compounds mark where the mills and factories stand. Rishra has a particular place in industrial history: India's first mechanised jute mill opened here in 1855, and the riverfront plots along the bank still show where that industry once was.
