Rocky Mount grew around the falls of the Tar River and later around the railroad, and both still shape the map. The main rail line runs straight through downtown along Main Street, which also marks the boundary between Nash and Edgecombe counties, so the city straddles two counties. From above, a regular grid of blocks sits on either side of this north-south spine.
To the north, the Tar River bends past Rocky Mount Mills, a cotton mill founded in 1818 and now redeveloped as a mixed-use district. The river corridor, with its wooded banks and parks, brings a soft curve to the otherwise orderly plan. A Rocky Mount map poster places mill, river and railroad in a single, legible frame.
Beyond the historic core, the city spreads into residential streets, commercial strips and highway interchanges, with the farmland of eastern North Carolina all around.
