Rossendale is a borough in east Lancashire made up of several towns, including Rawtenstall, Bacup and Haslingden, strung along deep valleys in the South Pennines. From above, the built-up areas form narrow ribbons that follow the valley floors and the River Irwell, while the high moors between them stay almost empty.
The valley grew with the cotton and woollen mills of the industrial era and later became known for making footwear, especially slippers. Terraced streets climb the hillsides in parallel rows, and the heritage East Lancashire Railway still runs along part of the valley.

Rows of terraced houses climb the slopes in close parallel lines, a pattern typical of Pennine mill towns and very clear in black and white.
Open moorland
High moors separate the valleys, appearing as wide white areas crossed only by a few roads and tracks, which gives the map its dramatic contrast.
