Sankt Augustin lies in the Rhein-Sieg district of North Rhine-Westphalia, just northeast of Bonn and next to Siegburg. It was created in 1969 by combining several villages, and that origin is still visible from above: distinct districts with their own centres, separated by fields, woods and roads, rather than one continuous core.
The town takes its name from the mission house of St. Augustin, founded by the Steyl Missionaries, which remains a landmark. Today Sankt Augustin is also known for research and education, including a campus of the Bonn-Rhein-Sieg University of Applied Sciences and Fraunhofer institutes at Schloss Birlinghoven. The Sieg River runs along its northern side.
