Sanremo has room to grow in only one direction, along the coast. The town stretches as a narrow band beside the Ligurian Sea, with a harbour and seafront promenades at its edge. Behind it the ground climbs quickly into hills cut by terraces and scattered with greenhouses, a legacy of the flower growing that gave this stretch the name Riviera dei Fiori.
Above the modern centre sits La Pigna, the medieval quarter. Its lanes coil tightly up a hillside in a shape that locals compare to a pine cone. On the map it shows as a knot of short, bending lines, quite unlike the straighter streets below. Roads switch back up the slopes, while the main coastal routes run parallel to the shore.
Sanremo is known for its casino, for the Italian song festival held in the town every winter, and as the finish of the Milan–Sanremo cycling classic. Coastal strip
The town runs in a long, thin band along the shore. The seafront and harbour form a clean edge where the street pattern stops and the open sea begins.
