Sassari is the second city of Sardinia, built on a limestone plateau that slopes gently down towards the northwest and the Gulf of Asinara. On the map, the historic centre forms a compact oval of narrow lanes, crossed diagonally by the Corso Vittorio Emanuele, the old main street that runs down through the medieval town.
Beyond the old walls, the nineteenth century added broad avenues and the large Piazza d'Italia, which marks the transition to the modern city. Sassari is a university city, home to one of the oldest universities on the island, and every August it holds the Faradda di li Candareri, a procession of giant wooden candles recognised by UNESCO.
