Sechura stands in the Piura Region of northern Peru, a short distance inland from the Pacific coast and close to where the Piura River reaches the sea. To the south stretches the Sechura Desert, one of the driest coastal deserts in South America. On a map the town's grid of streets appears as a compact patch of order set against sand and scrub.
The town has a long colonial history. Its church, with a broad facade flanked by twin towers, stands on the main plaza at the centre of the grid. Streets run out from the plaza in regular blocks, a pattern shared by many Spanish-founded towns in Peru, before giving way to newer districts and open ground.
Sechura Bay supports one of Peru's important fishing and scallop-farming areas, and the province also contains large phosphate deposits near Bayóvar. Just beyond the town, the Piura River spreads across the flat coastal plain on its way to the Pacific, adding soft, irregular curves to the composition.
