Semikarakorsk Map Poster & Print
Semikarakorsk is a town in Rostov Oblast on the lower Don. It began as a Cossack settlement, and it is now known across Russia for Semikarakorsk faience: hand-painted ceramics with bright floral patterns produced in the town. Around it spreads the flat, agricultural land of the Don steppe.
The map is clear and orderly. Long, straight streets form a regular grid of rectangular blocks, a layout common to southern Russian towns that were planned and rebuilt in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. On one side, the Don curves past the town with its floodplain, side channels and oxbows. Beyond the last streets, broad fields take over.
A Semikarakorsk map poster brings together the discipline of that grid and the loose, meandering shape of the river. The contrast is simple but effective, and in monochrome the regular blocks read almost like a textile pattern set beside the curve of the water.

The Don
The river curves past the town, bordered by a wide floodplain with side channels and old meanders that soften the map's edge.
Ceramic tradition
The town gives its name to Semikarakorsk faience, a painted ceramic tradition that is closely associated with the place and known well beyond the region.
