The town's streets are old and irregular, built up over centuries rather than laid out on a plan, and they close in near the centre. The town is known across Bengal for its handloom cotton, and Shantipuri saris have long been a regional name. It also has deep ties to Bengali Vaishnavism and is associated with Advaita Acharya, a companion of Chaitanya. Its Ras festival draws visitors every autumn, and the town's many old temples reflect that devotional history.
