Sofia sits in a broad valley at the foot of Vitosha, whose northern slopes rise directly behind the southern districts. The city's layout radiates from a compact centre where old boulevards meet, then widens into planned neighbourhoods and large housing estates, all enclosed by a ring road that bends around the valley.
Ancient Serdica lies beneath the centre, and Roman remains can still be seen among modern streets. The Alexander Nevsky Cathedral, with its gilded domes, stands just east, and nearby streets are paved with distinctive yellow cobblestones. Green spaces break up the grid, most notably Borisova Gradina, a large park stretching southeast from the centre.
