Sokcho lies on Korea's east coast in Gangwon-do, on a narrow strip of land between the East Sea and the mountains. The map shows the town wrapped around two lagoons, Cheongchoho and Yeongnangho, whose round and irregular shapes sit just inside the coastline. The streets fill the ground between the water, forming one of the most distinctive coastal plans in the country.
Beside the harbour, Abai Village was settled by refugees from the north during the Korean War, and small ferries still cross the channel that links Cheongchoho to the sea. The port, fish markets and beaches line the shore, and on the map they trace a long edge where streets meet open water.

Harbour and Abai
The harbour and the small Abai Village on its spit form a finely detailed area at the entrance to Cheongchoho, linked by a short ferry crossing.
Toward Seoraksan
West of the town, the streets thin out and roads climb toward the ridges of Seoraksan, giving the map a rising, open edge.
