Świebodzice lies in Lower Silesia between Wałbrzych and Świdnica, where the Sudeten foothills meet the flatter land to the north. On a map the historic centre forms a tight knot around a rectangular market square. Streets lead out along the valley of the Pełcznica, and housing estates spread up the slopes.
The town has a long industrial past and is known especially for clockmaking. The Gustav Becker factory was founded here in the nineteenth century, when the town was called Freiburg in Schlesien, and its clocks sold across Europe. The tradition is still part of local identity. Railway lines, former factory sites and workers' housing all leave their mark on the street plan.
Just to the south begin the forested gorges around Książ Castle, one of the largest castles in Poland, which stands above a wooded ravine. Pełcznica valley
The small river runs through the town and draws a curving line past the centre. It guides the direction of the roads, the railway and later development.
Wooded southern edge
To the south the streets give way to forest and hills near Książ. Here the map changes from dense urban detail to open, green country.
