Tampa sits at the head of Tampa Bay on Florida's Gulf coast, where the bay splits into Hillsborough Bay and Old Tampa Bay around the Interbay Peninsula. The result is a city that is as much shoreline as land. Downtown faces the water at the mouth of the Hillsborough River, with Harbour Island and Davis Islands lying just offshore.
The Hillsborough River curves north from downtown through older neighbourhoods such as Tampa Heights and Seminole Heights. Bayshore Boulevard follows the bay south along a continuous waterfront walkway several miles long. To the northeast, Ybor City keeps the tight blocks of the district built around cigar factories in the late nineteenth century.
Long causeways and bridges link the city across the bay toward St. Petersburg and Clearwater, and they give a Tampa map poster its most distinctive lines. MacDill Air Force Base occupies the southern tip of the peninsula. In monochrome, the balance of water and land becomes the whole design, with grids on one side and open bay on the other.

Bayshore Boulevard
A long, gently curving road and waterfront sidewalk along Hillsborough Bay. It traces one of the cleanest lines between city and water anywhere on the Gulf coast.
