Tan-Tan lies in southern Morocco, in the Guelmim-Oued Noun region, where the land turns into open Saharan desert. The town sits inland from the Atlantic on a dry plain cut by the beds of seasonal wadis. Its map shows low-rise blocks and straight roads laid out on mostly level ground, with open desert beyond the last houses.
The town is known for the Moussem of Tan-Tan, a yearly gathering of the nomadic peoples of the Sahara, with camel trading, tents, music and horsemanship. Wadi beds
Dry riverbeds wind across the plain near the town and fill with water only after rare rains. They add a few organic curves to an otherwise geometric composition.
