Taranto Map Poster & Print
Taranto is known in Italy as the city of two seas. The Mar Grande, an open bay on the Gulf of Taranto, lies to the west, and the Mar Piccolo, an enclosed inner sea, lies to the north-east. The city occupies the strip of land between them, and its map is defined by water on almost every side.
The old town sits on a small island, once the tip of a peninsula, reached from the new town by a swing bridge over a navigable canal and from the west by a second bridge. South-east of it the nineteenth-century Borgo Nuovo spreads in a regular grid, while the naval base and the vast steelworks occupy the shores beyond.
The city began as Taras, a colony founded by Spartans in the eighth century BC, and its national archaeological museum holds much from that period. A Taranto map poster shows a place shaped by that ancient choice of site: a narrow neck of land, a sheltered inner sea and a harbour that is still in use.

Island old town
The Città Vecchia is a tight, oval knot of narrow alleys on its island, instantly readable against the open water and the wider streets of the new town.
Mar Piccolo
The inner sea spreads into two lobed basins, traditionally used for mussel farming, and its irregular shoreline gives the upper half of the map its shape.
