Tarragona rises on a rocky hill above the Mediterranean coast of Catalonia. On a map the old town is a compact, irregular quarter at the top of the hill, enclosed by walls first built by the Romans, while the Rambla Nova runs straight down from it to a cliff-top viewpoint over the sea. To the south-west, the port and the mouth of the Francolí River fill the flatter ground.
As Tarraco, the city was a major capital of Roman Hispania, and its remains, including the amphitheatre beside the beach, the circus and stretches of wall, are listed by UNESCO. The cathedral stands at the highest point of the old town. Tarragona is also a centre of the Catalan tradition of castells, the human towers built at local festivals.

The broad avenue runs in a straight line toward the sea and ends at a viewpoint above the cliffs, one of the clearest strokes on the map.
